As is the case in many scientific fields, recent developments
in marine data collection technologies, including satellite-based
sensors, underwater video and acoustic technologies, have
resulted in the collection of vast repositories of marine-related
scientific data. To be used effectively by the marine science
community, new techniques for storing, retrieving and disseminating
this scientific data need to be developed and an essential
resource underpinning this development is the Internet.
Two research projects within the School are investigating
new ways of storing and retrieving image-based and spatially-referenced
marine data on the Internet. One is evaluating and developing
storage and retrieval algorithms for remote sensing images
and derived products and the other is looking at ways of
retrieving photographs taken by scientific expeditioners
in Antarctica.
