Software Project

Software Project Overview

Software Engineering Project provides students with experience developing a medium-sized computing project in a small team of four or five students. The students gain real industry experience by undertaking projects proposed by local businesses with the team interacting directly with the ‘client’ for their project. The students work on the project for two semesters and each student puts in around 11 hours of work a week on the project. In 2006 there are 115 students completing 24 projects.

Software Engineering Project provides students with the experience of working in a team and dealing with the associated problems of communication and team management. Real industry projects and teamwork have a great impact on student learning and commitment. On completion, the students have an in-depth knowledge of their project domain and they have the ability to apply that knowledge in practice. The students become effective problem-solvers, capable of applying logical, critical and creative thinking to a range of problems. Software Engineering Project also focuses on giving the students numerous opportunities to develop verbal and technology-based communication skills.

"The third-year software engineering projects were regarded as a particular success of the School, and are well received by industry. The School is to be congratulated on the initiatives it has taken with respect to its project-based subject and the links it has forged with industry."

"Project really is a once in a lifetime experience… "
Rowan Miller, Video Team 2004, Reflection Report

"The project team was very professional and throughout the year they definitely learnt a lot which was demonstrated through their preparation and urgency to successfully complete the tasks as well as in a professional real time project. Definitely exceeded my expectations in most areas, especially on the development and end result of the project."
