Introduction

Our client, the State Library of Tasmania, requires information to be recorded about items as they travel from one destination to another. This information will be used to analyse the effectiveness of the library book transfer system, with the future goal being to improve that system.

The nature of the State Library allows a book to be taken out from one library and returned to another library anywhere in the state. This creates issues as books have to be returned to their native library.

The State Library also allows items to be requested (also known as ‘placing a hold’) from any library in the state. The items will then be sent to the library where the request was made.

Therefore, items are travelling both to ‘fill holds’ and to return to their native libraries. Items are boxed at each library location and sent to clearing houses in either Launceston or Rosny and are then repacked and hopefully, sent directly to their final destination.
